PROSPECTIVE DONORS:
Prospective donors should inform family members of their wish to donate their body. Since there is a time limit for accepting the body after death (within 48 hours) it is usually not sufficient to include intentions about body donations in wills.
Any adult may make an anatomical gift in writing, including through a will, a donor card or by a statement imprinted or attached to a motor vehicle operator’s license.
When a donor dies, family members should contact the Anatomical Donation Program immediately after the the pronouncement of death. A licensed funeral director working with the Donation Program will take the body to the program site at no cost to the estate of the deceased.
Some conditions that interfere with donation include obesity or extreme underweight, edema or swelling, dehydration, an autopsy, or infectious diseases. The body will be evaluated at the time of death to determine if it is suitable for teaching and research purposes.
