What does Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) consist of for individuals with an opioid and other substance use disorder addiction? It is an effective three fold treatment plan that works to assist the individual with medication, counseling and support from family and friends. The most common medications used in treatment are methadone and buprenorphine, and in some instances naltrexone may be used.
What is Narcan and how can it be obtained? Naloxone (also known as Narcan) can be a lifesaving medication that reverses the effects of an overdose from opioids (heroin, oxycontin, oxycodone, fentanyl) is also available at pharmacies with trained pharmacists who can prescribe and dispense of medication. In addition to pharmacists, physicians, surgeons, APRNs, dentists and other medical staff can also provide naloxone. Link here for distribution sites in Connecticut.
What is the role of a Recovery Coach? Recovery Coaches assist people who are admitted to participating hospital emergency departments with opioid overdose and other alcohol or drug-related issues with support services.
How do I safely dispose of unused medications? This can be a life-saving event – find a Local “Drug Collection Box/Other General Information”, where medications and other items can be disposed of safely and securely. Medication drop boxes are secured in the lobby of the police department and are accessible anytime the department is open. No questions asked, drop the unwanted medications in a box and they will be safely and securely destroyed.
