Finding Resources for Caregivers
Being a caregiver for a loved one can be overwhelming, especially if someone takes on the caregiver role suddenly. Many adults find themselves caring for older relatives, spouses, or children with disabilities at some point in their lives.
There are many resource guides available through AARP including guides on Caregiver life balance, Resources in the state of Connecticut, Military and Veteran caregiver resources, and Financial and Legal Information for caregivers. There is also an AARP Caregiver Helpline available for individuals that would rather receive information on resources over the phone. Information regarding elder law and resources for older adults can be found on CTLawHelp.org as well. Additional information for older adults cover the topics of benefits assistance, health and aging and more can be found on the 211 CT Older Adult category page.
Older adults and caregivers of older adults may be able to receive assistance such as information, referrals, insurance counseling and specialized programs through their local Area Agencies on Aging. There are also specialized programs throughout the state focused on specific populations such as individuals with brain injuries, cancer, developmental disabilities, and case management services for various populations.
Older adults and people caring for or concerned about older adults becoming a victim of fraud or scans can reach out to the AARP Fraud Watch Network Helpline and other resources that can provide information and assistance on fraud prevention. Various information can be found in the Grief and Loss guides for caregivers as well as other individuals experiencing the loss of a loved one.
Caregivers may be seeking information on adult respite care or child respite care for the adult or child that they are caring for from time to time or adult day programs. There are different programs that can provide respite care in the home and out of the home.
Caregivers seeking financial assistance may be eligible for family caregiver subsidies. There are also programs and support groups for kinship caregivers. Individuals seeking assistance with transportation options may be able to get assistance through senior ride programs or disability related transportation. Caregivers that are unable to find assistance with what they need can also call 2-1-1 at any time to speak with a Contact Specialist about their specific situation.
