Free Tax Preparation through the VITA Program (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance)
BASIC ELIGIBILITY FOR VITA: The VITA program is for individuals who generally make $56,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. Also, individuals who are self-employed should have business expenses less than $25,000, and individuals should not have income from a rental property.
COVID-19 AND VITA: Many VITA sites across the state have closed – at least temporarily – in an effort to ensure the health of volunteers and clients. Some physical VITA sites may reopen later in the spring as the tax deadline has been extended to July 15th. However, there are still ways to file your taxes for FREE now. Please see below for a list of Virtual VITA programs and other options for free filing right now.
VIRTUAL VITA Programs: Many VITA coalitions are offering clients an opportunity to still have their taxes completed for free by an IRS-certified volunteer via a combination of an online form and the telephone. Eligibility for the Virtual VITA program remains the same as traditional VITA. It is for individuals who generally make $56,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. Also, individuals who are self-employed should have business expenses less than $25,000, and individuals should not have income from a rental property. Individuals who qualify for VITA and have access to a smartphone or computer, internet/WiFi , and a valid phone number and email address, may take advantage of the Virtual VITA Program. VIRTUAL VITA FOR NON-FILERS: Taxpayers – like Social Security recipients – who don’t typically file but are looking to file in order to receive economic impact payments (EIP) for eligible children can do so through the EIP Non-Filer Virtual Portal. The portal was developed to assist those individuals and their families not required to file a tax return in receiving their EIP payment. IMPORTANT: Non-filers have until May 5th to file a simple tax return to get the additional $500 EIP for dependent children. The portal is available at https://form.jotform.com/Pgentile46336/CAHSEIPNon-Filer. And more information about the program can be found here: EIP Flyer – May 5th Deadline.
